Three previously published stories by Ruth Nestvold

"Feather and Ring" - A game designer is on business in Taiwan, attempting to pull off the commercial deal of her lifetime. Her husband is leaving her, their company is on the verge of bankruptcy, and it looks as though a hostile takeover may ruin them. But luckily for Lindsay, magic lurks in the streets of Taipei, hidden between the skyscrapers and the constant traffic.

"Woman in Abaya With Onion" - A young woman visiting Egypt is pitted against far more than mere cultural differences when she begins to be visited by violent visions from the past.

"If Tears Were Wishes" - "The smell of industrial strength cleansers was laced with the smell of urine. In the back of her mind, through the pain and anger and fear, Brooke registered that the girls' bathroom didn't smell this way, pungent behind the clean, the traces of decades of boys and young men missing the urinals impossible to get out of the walls and the floor. The gag in her mouth tasted like dusty cotton.... She could tell from the third boy's expression that he would have hit her too if not for the vials he held. Vials which held a fortune. The rarest substance in the world her tears."

"If Tears Were Wishes and Other Short Stories" is a story collection of approximately 14000 words.

This book had three stories: "Feather and Ring", "Woman in Abaya with Onion", and "If Tears Were Wishes". These are all set in the modern day and feature American women protagonists, but are set in different countries."

"Feather and Ring" follows Lindsay, a game designer whose marriage and career is falling apart. While visiting Taiwan, she meets a mysterious woman who just might be a goddess. This is a pretty simple and endearing story, and I liked it. 'I'm not quite sure if I understood the second story, '"Woman in Abaya with Onion"', but I enjoyed it all the same. It follows Haley, a young woman that has a series of hallucinations of previous massacres in the places that she visits, even as she falls in love with a young Egyptian man. It was a bit more ominous than Nestvold's usual style.

"If Tears Were Wishes" was probably my favourite of the three stories. It follows a pair of twins whose tears grant wishes. One of the twins, Brooke, is kidnapped to take advantage of her power, and the other, Crystal vows to find her. Things get pretty interesting since each of them has the power to grant wishes. I loved the ending, too.

If Tears Were Wishes And Other Short Stories eBook Ruth Nestvold Reviews

Well, I'm kind of ambivalent overall. There were so many details packed into each of the 3 stories in the book that I had a hard time remembering them all.

Each of the 3 stories is centered around a female protagonist. In the first two, "Feather and Ring" and "Woman in Abaya with Onion," the protagonists are females wandering in "foreign" lands Taiwan and Egypt, respectively. Drawing upon ancient stereotypes of these countries, in each story, the protagonist is subjected to magic In Taiwan, the protagonist meets a goddess; in Egypt, the protagonist is cursed by an unknown entity. My reaction, if you couldn't tell, is a little more than skeptical, as I tend to think that these stories reinforce existing stereotypes about the Middle East and the Far East as "magical" and "exotic", places where people can go to "rediscover" themselves.

Given the details provided, I also wondered if the author had traveled to either of these regions. If the answer is yes, then I wonder why she bothered to situate the stories in these locations. The theme of the first story, love, redemption, and "finding yourself," could have been applied to various settings. Why Taiwan specifically? It seemed a choice of convenience more than anything. Ditto for the story set in Egypt.

The third story, "If Tears Were Wishes," was, in my opinion, the best of the three. Instead of utilizing a foreign setting as the main point of interest, the plot is centered around a fantastical phenomenon--leading to a much more interesting, and genuine, story overall.

However, overall, the stories need to be more fleshed out. I felt as though I had only started each of the three. I think they could benefit from elongation! And maybe more selective choices about the details included in each. (Such as the "Farm" backstory in "If Tears were Wishes. Not sure why that was there...? Or what it had to do with the plot).
